Getting away from it all to comfort

Tara Crescent – Mangawhai

The brief

Wanting to simply relax with their four kids during their breaks away from their busy lives, low-maintenance inside and out was important to our clients. Modern holiday homes are all about free-flowing, open-plan living spaces that have a great connection to the outdoors, opening up to the view and the sun.

This 215m2, 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom single-storey holiday home has great connections between indoor spaces and outdoor decks. The house sits beautifully on a 1ha block drinking in the rural views. Surrounded by hardwood decks, we also created a fabulous alfresco outdoor dining area with louvered roof and wood-fired pizza oven.

Standout feature

This home has a separate media room which is most often commandeered by the kids and their various mates. The room has a white-washed plywood interior that fits in well with the beach / holiday home aesthetic. The owners incorporated built-in bunks into the room, also constructed of white-washed plywood, but with negative detailing in black. They just look fantastic.

Other notable features of this building include the “factory finished” polished concrete floors throughout. The floors are given only the lightest of grinds, so that no aggregate is exposed. In order to achieve this stunning look, pouring the floors had to be 100% perfect, and our team got it spot on. We were stoked.

Other highlights of this high-end build include the beautiful, indoor gas fireplace with white painted brickwork and the wonderful designer kitchen.

The background behind this holiday home

This fabulous holiday home was built for a local plumber with whom we have often worked over the years. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this of project for us was working with visionary clients. The owners were creative with an appreciation for good design.

Coming from a construction and trades background meant the couple were really clear about what they expected from us. It also meant they were good at pre-empting any potential issues and keeping the lines of communication wide open.

Clients often come to us without necessarily being referred by an architect. In this instance, our clients came to us with their own architectural plans already drawn up. We were then invited to look over the plans, give our input, formulate pricing estimates and submit the plans and specifications with council for building consent.

This process worked well for both our team and the clients, as we prefer to be involved with a building project from the outset. So people are able to make more informed decisions, we like being able to put forward ideas and offer the best advice at the critical design stage. We can point out the pros and cons of using certain products, advise on the amount of maintenance certain products require etc.

With outstanding attention to detail and workmanship, our team has created an exceptional retreat for the owners to enjoy, and we’re thrilled to have been able to do this for them.
